Remember before rating too harshly that I am more of a cutscenes music person than really a precision-quantization chiptune loops person.  So my output is more freeform and focused on getting a musical idea down before I forget it, rather than all that much refinement.   I manually perform on the FA-08 and then move WAV/Midi over to the laptop but I tend not to edit much in Mixcraft 10.5 except to stretch or compress for timing. (and to mix down to mp3's)

Here's my think outside the box interpretation of the plot:

The suit is too large to fit her but she's kept it because it's valuable to harvest technology from it.  It's more advanced than her entire ship.  She knows how to make another one in theory but the materials are so rare that the entire nearby nebula only yields her a finger-sized nugget of the right ores or metals every few months.

It is a spare suit that belonged to a larger humanoid species person who cared for her after her parents died.  And then after raising her for a while he also got into a mishap.

So before he was gone he taught her just enough advanced knowledge to repair the suit and therefore she knows enough to take components from it to be of help over time.

The suit is dear to her because she's adrift in space and nobody is around that really knows how to make another suit of this kind.

But she has to use components of its technology to fight enemies that happen along her in deep space by going outside her ship.

And just also make repairs outside in space.

She -does- know enough about the suit to repair it, but just the limitations are she cannot make one from nothing.  

So at the time of the music she has been on her own for a while but not that long since her guardian passed.  She has an encounter with some kind of space parasite and then goes to a trading center in a nearby nebula for repairs.
